We’re often asked why qualifications from colleges and universities are less in demand than the more qualifications from the commercial sector?
Industry now recognises that to cover the necessary commercial skill-sets, official accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe is far more effective and specialised - for much less time and money.
Essentially, only required knowledge is taught. It isn’t quite as lean as that might sound, but the most important function is always to focus on the exact skills required (along with a certain amount of crucial background) - without overdoing the detail in everything else (as degree courses are known to do).
Just as the old advertisement said: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. All an employer has to do is know what areas need to be serviced, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. That way they can be sure they’re interviewing applicants who can do the job.
Some training providers offer a Job Placement Assistance program, designed to steer you into your first job. Often, this feature is bigged up too much, as it’s really not that difficult for a well trained and motivated person to secure a job in the IT industry - as employers are keen to find appropriately qualified personnel.
Help and assistance with preparing a CV and getting interviews is sometimes offered (if not, see one of our sites for help). Make sure you update that dusty old CV straight away - not when you’re ready to start work!
Quite frequently, you will get your first role whilst still on the course (even when you’ve just left first base). If you haven’t updated your CV to say what you’re studying (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you aren’t even in the running!
The top companies to help you find a job are normally local IT focused employment agencies. As they’re keen to place you to receive their commission, they’ll work that much harder to get a result.
Not inconsiderable numbers of people, it would appear, are prepared to study their hearts out (sometimes for years), only to give up at the first hurdle when attempting to secure their first job. Sell yourself… Work hard to get yourself known. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.
Massive developments are coming via technology over the next generation - and the industry becomes more ground-breaking every year.
Society largely thinks that the revolution in technology we have experienced is lowering its pace. There is no truth in this at all. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and the internet particularly is going to dominate how we conduct our lives.
And it’s worth remembering that income in the IT sector across the UK is significantly more than average salaries nationally, so in general you’ll more than likely gain considerably more as an IT specialist, than you could reasonably hope to achieve elsewhere.
It seems there’s no easing up for IT sector increases in Great Britain as a whole. The market sector is still growing hugely, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s not showing any signs that there’ll be any kind of easing off for years to come.

It’s really great that you’ve already got this far! Only one in ten folks say they enjoy their work, but vast numbers just go off on one from time to time and take no action. By looking for this we can guess that you’re at least considering retraining, so well done to you. Take your time now to research and follow-through.
We suggest that you discuss your ideas first - talk to a knowledgeable person; an advisor who can discover your ideal job, and offer only the learning programs that will suit you:
* Is collaborating with others important to you? Would that be with the same people or with many new people? Perhaps working alone with your own methodology would be more your thing?
* Do you have a preference which market sector you choose to work in? (In this economy, it’s even more crucial to choose carefully.)
* When you’ve done all your re-training, would you like your new abilities to get you jobs for the rest of your working life?
* Are you confident that your chosen retraining is commercially viable, and will have the ability to keep you in work until your pension kicks in?
We would advise you to find out more about the IT sector - there are a larger number of roles than staff to fill them, plus it’s one of the few choices of career where the sector is still growing. Despite what some people believe, IT isn’t all techie people lost in their PC’s all day long (some jobs are like that of course.) Most positions are filled by people like you and me who enjoy a very nice lifestyle due to better than average wages.
Coming across job security these days is problematic. Businesses often throw us out of the workforce at the drop of a hat - as and when it suits them.
Security only exists now in a rapidly rising market, driven by a shortage of trained workers. These circumstances create just the right environment for a secure marketplace - a more attractive situation all round.
The 2006 British e-Skills study brought to light that over 26 percent of all IT positions available are unfilled mainly due to an appallingly low number of well-trained staff. Or, to put it differently, this clearly demonstrates that the UK only has 3 certified professionals for each 4 job positions in existence today.
Attaining proper commercial IT certification is accordingly a quick route to realise a life-long as well as enjoyable career.
Surely, now, more than ever, really is such a perfect time to join IT.
Usually, trainers will provide a bunch of books and manuals. This isn’t very interesting and not ideal for achieving retention.
Our ability to remember is increased when all our senses are brought into the mix - learning experts have been saying this for years now.
Start a study-program in which you’ll receive a library of CD or DVD ROM’s - you’ll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, followed by the chance to hone your abilities through virtual lab’s.
Be sure to get a training material demonstration from the school that you’re considering. You’ll want to see expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and fully interactive skills-lab’s.
It’s folly to choose training that is only available online. Connection quality and reliability varies hugely across the ISP (internet service provider) market, ensure that you have access to CD or DVD ROM based materials.
Massive developments are flooding technology in the near future - and this means greater innovations all the time.
Computer technology and connections via the web is going to spectacularly change the way we live our lives in the near future; profoundly so.
Should lifestyle be up there on your goal sheet, then you’ll welcome the news that the usual remuneration for IT employees in general is considerably higher than with most other jobs or industries.
Due to the technological sector emerging year on year, it’s looking good that the requirement for qualified professionals will continue actively for a good while yet.
Make sure you don’t get caught-up, like so many people do, on the certification itself. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.
Imagine training for just one year and then end up doing a job for a lifetime. Ensure you avoid the fatal error of choosing what sounds like an ‘interesting’ training program only to spend 20 years doing a job you don’t like!
Get to grips with the income level you aspire to and what level of ambition fits you. This will influence which accreditations will be expected and how much effort you’ll have to give in return.
Have a chat with a skilled professional who understands the work you’re contemplating, and is able to give you an in-depth explanation of what to expect in that role. Getting to the bottom of all this long before you start on any study program makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?
